New trees at Springfield’s Mill Race pond protect the Willamette River

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The City of Springfield planted 500 native trees and shrubs at the Mill Race stormwater treatment pond to improve water quality, provide shade and create habitat for wildlife near downtown Springfield.

The city completed the planting on Sept. 30, focusing on the south side of the pond. The new vegetation will provide shade over the water as it grows, keeping water temperatures low to benefit fish and aquatic life.

The plants also stabilize the pond’s bank and provide food and shelter for wildlife. According to the City of Springfield, the plants are part of the stormwater treatment system…
