Dame Deborah James, known affectionately as “Bowelbabe,” was celebrated in a heartfelt tribute on what would have been her 45th birthday. Prince William honored her legacy with a surprise video message at the inaugural Rebel Ball in London on October 1, an event supporting the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK-a cause Deborah passionately championed during her final months.
“Tonight would have been Deborah’s 45th birthday, and I know she would have wanted everyone dancing, celebrating, and making memories,” Prince William said, describing her as truly “incomparable.” James was admired for her candidness and humor throughout her battle with cancer, often sharing her journey with warmth and levity on her podcast, You, Me and the Big C. She embraced a philosophy she called “rebellious hope,” a sentiment the Prince echoed in his remarks.
When James entered hospice care, she launched the Bowelbabe Fund aiming to raise £250,000 for cancer research and awareness, a goal that was far exceeded as the campaign ultimately raised millions. Earlier in the year, Prince William visited her at home to personally present her damehood, sharing a quiet moment of tea and champagne with her family.
The tribute comes amid a challenging time for the royal family, with King Charles III and Catherine, Princess of Wales, both announcing cancer diagnoses in 2024. Catherine later shared news of her remission in January 2025.
True to Deborah’s vibrant spirit, the Rebel Ball was a lively celebration filled with music and joy. Performances by Sophie Ellis-Bextor and the West End cast of Disco Inferno energized the evening, while Deborah’s children, Hugo and Eloise, spoke movingly about the meaning of “rebellious hope” today.
Her husband, Sebastien Bowen, described the event as a reflection of Deborah’s courage, energy, and remarkable ability to unite people. The fundraiser succeeded in raising approximately $420,000 (£316,000) for Cancer Research UK and the Bowelbabe Fund, ensuring that Deborah James’ impactful work continues to inspire and support cancer research.
