Missouri woman convicted in Medicaid fraud involving jailed daughter

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway announced that the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit secured a Medicaid fraud conviction against Melissa Bates in connection with false personal care service claims submitted while her daughter, Dajah Sanders, was incarcerated.

According to the attorney general’s office, Bates used her own phone to clock Sanders in and out as though Sanders were providing personal care services. The arrangement allowed Sanders to receive Medicaid payments for services she could not have performed while incarcerated at the St. Louis County Justice Center.

Sanders was incarcerated at the St. Louis County Justice Center from Sept. 10 through Sept. 20, 2022. During that period, Bates submitted information to Missouri Medicaid indicating that she received personal care services on eight separate days, averaging approximately four hours per day…
