The tornado sparked a housing crisis in north St. Louis. It’s set to get even worse

Nearly a year and a half after a tornado ripped through the north and west sides of St. Louis, recovery work is slowly creeping along in the area. But the city’s head of tornado recovery efforts says an ongoing housing crisis in the area still could get worse.

The tornado recovery office updated members of the Board of Aldermen this week as part of a hearing on the spending progress of the city’s $255 million in Rams settlement funds allocated earlier this year. City officials tapped around $90 million of those funds for tornado recovery.

During the update, Chief Recovery Officer Julian Nicks said that as programs that have provided funding for temporary housing to tornado victims come to a close, many whom the city has helped stay housed may not have a place to go…
