Richmond homeowners who are two or more years behind on property taxes could see their homes auctioned off — but the city says it will reach out and offer payment plans before any sale happens.
Mayor Danny Avula announced this week that Richmond is relaunching its Real Estate Tax Sale Program, identifying 85 properties flagged for potential auction to recover unpaid taxes, according to Richmond’s press release announcing the relaunch. The first sale isn’t expected until around June 2027, so owners still have time to act.
Of the $24.2 million currently delinquent citywide, only $5.4 million has crossed the two-year threshold Virginia law requires before a property can go to auction. Those 85 flagged properties are still under review to confirm they meet all legal requirements…
