Boston’s Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority both showcased recently-completed station upgrades, with the MTA detailing some ongoing station (re)construction work focused on accessibility. Plus, the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) Board of Directors approved the addition of a new station in Northern California.
The MBTA on Sept. 30 held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Milton walkway, which is ADA-accessible and connects Adams Street and Milton Station in Milton, Mass.
The project is part of the five-year Mattapan Line Program, which began in 2022. It includes numerous improvements to Mattapan Line track and structures:
- Station accessibility enhancements.
- Upgraded communications systems.
- New traction power substation and equipment at Mattapan Yard.
- Replacement of the trolley wire.
- Construction of a new vehicle maintenance facility at Mattapan Yard.
- Spot rail and tie replacement.
- Targeted drainage improvements.
- Replacement of retaining wall between Central Avenue and Milton stations.
- Targeted bridge rehabilitation.
Implementation of the program is set to continue through 2026 and 2027…
