Marion father found not guilty by reason of insanity seeks independent evaluation

LINN COUNTY, Iowa — A Marion man found not guilty by reason of insanity in the 2024 killing of his 5-year-old son is asking a Linn County judge to allow an independent mental health evaluation while he remains hospitalized.

Matthew Schleier’s attorney filed a motion Sept. 15 seeking permission for Dr. Lauren Robinson to examine Schleier at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute. Schleier’s attorney said the institute requested a court order before allowing the evaluation to be arranged.

Schleier was acquitted by reason of insanity in April after a judge found he was legally insane at the time he killed his son, Jack, in October 2024. He has remained at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute for treatment. A Linn County judge in August ordered Schleier to continue hospitalization after doctors recommended he remain at the facility…
