Ex-immigration officer pleads guilty to stealing $60K from her union for meals, dance lessons

A former federal immigration officer pleaded guilty to wire fraud in a Boston federal court after stealing more than $60,000 from a local labor union to fund personal expenses, including dance lessons and dining out, according a press release from U.S. Attorney Leah Foley.

Carol A. Aguja, 55, of Reading, admitted to taking funds from the American Federation of Government Employees Local 38 while serving as its treasurer, the press release reads. Aguja, who worked as an officer for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, used the stolen money between 2019 and 2024 to pay for restaurant meals, clothing, bills and other non-union expenses.

Aguja used a union credit card for about $12,508 in personal charges, transferred over $25,000 directly into her own accounts and made 128 cash withdrawals exceeding $22,700, according to the press release…
