Detroit Farm & Cider sues city to get its animals back

DETROIT — The owner of a Detroit farm whose animals were seized by the city earlier this month for public safety reasons is now suing the city to get the animals back along with unspecified financial compensation.

The federal suit was filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit on Sept. 29 by Leandra King, owner of Detroit Farm & Cider, 1636 Lawrence Street. She seeks not only the animals confiscated by the city on Sept. 4, but also animals taken in 2021 in which the city removed, including a horse named Rio and approximately 14 chickens from the property, according to the suit.

On Sept. 4 of this year, Detroit officials seized all of the animals at Detroit Farm & Cider, which the city described as a public safety measure.
