Iowan who suffered heart attack reunites with first responders that saved his life

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — In May, Cedar Rapidian Shawn Bergquist suffered a heart attack during a bike ride, but it was thanks to fast acting by his friends and first responders that made the difference in him still being here. Five months later, Bergquist, and his family, met those who saved his life.

“If they didn’t know CPR and they didn’t know how to respond in a crisis, my husband I think would not be here today because the doctor, the first thing he said to me is 85% of people have cardiac arrest out of the hospital do not survive,” Jackie, Shawn’s wife, said during the reunion Saturday.

Bergquist told Iowa’s News Now he was halfway through a 14-mile bike ride in Cedar Rapids around Ely Rd SW and Wheatland Dr SW with three longtime friends before he went into cardiac arrest…
