New Orleans is a flat city, but where are the highest and lowest points? It’s complicated.

You can say a lot of things about New Orleans, but it is not a city of steep inclines or hills.

Finding a highest or lowest point in the city can be challenging and can vary based on certain parameters, said Richard Campanella, a Tulane University geographer who has long studied the state’s topography and architecture. He noted southeast Louisiana as a whole does not have very distinct highs and lows because it is a river delta.

New Orleans has some areas that gradually up slope along the Mississippi River and the lowest portions that tend to gradually slope backward into low-lying swampy areas. Getting a reliable topographic measurement in such a dynamic landscape can also be difficult…
