Austin ICE arrests more than doubled this summer, data shows

AUSTIN (KXAN) – In the aftermath of a September shooting where federal agents shot and injured Wilber Rafael Garces Perez in north Austin, local leaders described an increase in Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity and arrests around the city as a surge.

“I think the message is, for Austin to be safe, ICE should end its surge here in our community” U.S. Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) said in a press conference on Sept. 21 after the shooting.
