Inside Amazon’s largest North Carolina fulfillment center, now open near Wilmington

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Amazon’s newest fulfillment center near Wilmington is now open, bringing about 1,100 employees and an operation that uses artificial intelligence-powered robots to move, sort and pack orders.

The 650,000-square-foot facility sits on the New Hanover and Pender County line. It’s bigger than 11 football fields, making it one of Amazon’s largest facilities in the country and the largest in North Carolina, according to company officials.

The robots help move items, pack and sort orders and create boxes. Josh Lingenfelser, the facility’s general manager, said the building is expected to run 25% to 30% more efficiently than Amazon’s Gen 11 facilities based on speed-to-customers and cost…
