Jersey City Council caucus sees tensions boil over regarding accelerated tax sales

The Jersey City Council debated delaying the annual December accelerated tax sale as tensions boiled over on the topic at yesterday’s caucus.

Tax Collector Sean Nolan explained he had several tax sale-related items on the agenda, including the tax sale acceleration, drawing concerns that homeowners struggling to pay property taxes would be particularly affected.

“There’s been a number of concerns from constituents about the accelerated tax sale and I know that this is standard practice for the city and has been standard practice for years and years,” Ward D Councilman Jake Ephros noted.

“But nonetheless, I mean we are in a position where we are shopping out tax liens to third parties, many of whom may be pretty unsavory, predatory lenders in cases and we can’t control that once these liens go out to the private market, is my understanding.”…
