Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are reportedly preparing to issue an apology to the royal family regarding comments made during their highly publicized 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.
After stepping back from their roles as senior royals and relocating to the United States, Meghan, 45, claimed that a member of the royal family had expressed concerns about the potential skin color of their son, Prince Archie, before his birth. This allegation sparked significant tension within the family, especially as Meghan and Harry, 42, chose not to identify the individual involved. The claim prompted Prince William to publicly deny any involvement.
According to sources, the couple now wishes to make amends for the distress caused by these remarks. This development follows recent criticism they faced after withdrawing their children from school shortly after enrolling them.
A source told The Express, “Harry and Meghan have long understood that returning to the UK would require some humility. Their biggest regret since leaving the royal family has been the Oprah interview, particularly Meghan’s assertion about a royal discussing Archie’s skin color.
At the time, Harry was angry and stood firmly by Meghan, but they now recognize the severity of their comments. They acknowledge they acted impulsively and should have refrained from making such claims.”
The source added, “They want to move forward and are hopeful this will include reconciliation. They are seeking a private meeting to address their statements, during which Meghan plans to apologize.”
The couple remains optimistic about their return to the UK and hopes their children will develop genuine relationships with their cousins-Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
While Harry and Meghan visited King Charles at Highgrove earlier this year, allowing the King to spend time with Archie and Lilibet, communication between Harry and Prince William is said to have been minimal since 2022. The brothers reportedly crossed paths at several family occasions, including King Charles’s coronation in 2023 and their uncle Lord Robert Fellowes’s funeral in 2024, but did not engage with one another.
Though initial reports suggested Meghan and Harry might issue a televised public apology, their representatives have confirmed there will be no such interview and that they will not comment further on private family matters.
As they settle into life in the Cotswolds, the couple is intentionally avoiding media attention. A source explained, “Meghan is focused on blending in with the community. Their priority is to stay out of the spotlight and avoid any media presence that could hinder efforts to repair family relations.”
