Battle Creek police: Suspect armed with hammer stole patrol car, took off

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Police in Battle Creek say a suspect resisted arrest, telling officers that they “would have to shoot him,” then stole a patrol car and took off. He was eventually taken into custody.

It started around 3 a.m. Monday, when officers responded to Capital Avenue SW near Eldred Street for a reported breaking and entering. They found the suspect, a 36-year-old man, and noticed that he was carrying a hammer, according to the Battle Creek Police Department.

“According to the preliminary investigation, the suspect became hostile toward officers during the encounter and stated that officers would have to shoot him because he was not going back to jail,” the department wrote in a release.

Officers tried to deescalate the situation and use “less-lethal force,” but it didn’t work, according to the department. That’s when the man gained access to an unoccupied patrol vehicle and took off, the release continued…
