Iowa finally got a serious Buc-ee’s proposal this summer, but the first attempt did not make it through Urbandale City Council. That is a major change from earlier this year, when a look at Iowa’s Buc-ee’s prospects found public campaigns but no confirmed company-backed site.
The proposed travel center would occupy about 20 acres near Northwest 100th Street and Northpark Drive, close to the Interstate 35/80 interchange. Buc-ee’s representatives sought a change in the city’s comprehensive land-use plan from “Mixed Use” to “Corridor Commercial,” a designation intended for larger regional commercial development.
Urbandale council rejected the land-use change
On September 1, the City Council declined to approve the requested amendment. The city’s official meeting recap says the property remains designated for mixed use after the council’s decision.
The proposal represented more than another internet rumor. City records identify CSMS Management as the contract purchaser and a representative of Buc-ee’s, making this one of the clearest signs yet that the company has seriously explored an Iowa store…
