The Fluffernutter Has Been a New England Favorite for Generations

The simple sandwich, made with just three ingredients, is a staple in our region but is virtually unknown elsewhere.

The fluffernutter’s origins trace to Melrose, Massachusetts, where Emma Curtis published a recipe for a peanut butter and marshmallow creme sandwich called the “Liberty Sandwich” in 1918.

The recipe promoted her family’s Snowflake Marshmallow Creme and used oat or barley bread during World War I, when Americans were encouraged to conserve wheat and meat.

In 1960, an advertising agency working for Fluff manufacturer Durkee-Mower coined the name “Fluffernutter” to help market the peanut butter and marshmallow combination…
