UNC Will Be Without Cameron Fens in Preseason Opener Against USC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — While North Carolina fans have to wait two more days to see the Tar Heels take the court for the first time under Michael Malone, they’ll have to wait even longer to see Cameron Fens in action. Wednesday morning at ACC Tipoff in Charlotte, Malone confirmed that the fifth-year center will be sidelined for Friday’s exhibition matchup against USC in Greensboro.

“Cameron will not play Friday night,” Malone said. “He’s technically ineligible at the moment. He’s been practicing every day and is a big part of what we’ve been doing, and we’re going to let this process play out.”

Fens committed to Malone and the Tar Heels for his fifth season of college basketball on Aug. 7 after being granted an injunction that provided him an additional season of eligibility. Less than three weeks later, however, a Tennessee Court of Appeals ruling put a hitch in those plans and created uncertainty surrounding UNC’s frontcourt entering the season…
