ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (WDBJ) — Residents of a Rocky Mount neighborhood with more than 600 people say Diamond Avenue’s bridge is their only way in and out, and they worry about what could happen if it fails or a train blocks the road during an emergency.
“I can count each car that comes over this bridge. We hear it. It is so loud that it wakes us up in the night,” resident Sandra Smith said. She also worries that the bridge could fall or its planks could come loose.
“My fear is one day it’s going to fall. Or the planks are going to bounce out. And then you’re going to be stuck with your tire in a hole,” Smith said. “It’s only seconds between life and death.”…
