For Joanna Walesiewicz, baking started as an escape from her day job.

After spending her days working in social media marketing, the 26-year-old would head to the kitchen in San Diego and try out new recipes to relax. She gave away the fruits of her labor for free at first. Then her neighbors started asking if they could buy what she was making.

Her first sales were technically tips from those neighbors. She made her first official sale when a neighbor walking past her stand at a farmers market sent her money through Venmo for a loaf of banana bread…
