New Elephants Delicatessen owners to replace Northwest Portland location

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Nearly seven months after a fire destroyed a Northwest Portland deli, new ownership is working to bring another location to the area.

Elephants Delicatessen revealed on Wednesday that it expects to start operations on 13 NW 23rd Place in the Uptown Shopping Center early next year. It will be the first location opened under the leadership of The Ground, a farm and hospitality company based in Carlton.

The Ground co-founder Frank Foti will step in as the CEO of Elephants Delicatessen, according to the announcement. He has signed a definitive agreement to take over the shares of the deli’s majority stakeholder, Henry Hillman — who has led the company for more than four years as it expanded and partnered with more than 40 other businesses, like New Seasons and Williams-Sonoma.

“Henry’s foresight and investment have produced a great foundation from which The Ground can expand Elephants’ geographical reach and add regenerative offerings to the amazing options already available,” Foti said in a statement. “The humble and caring culture that exists at Elephants and The Ground are a beautiful fit, and the chance to serve all of Oregon and SW Washington is an exciting prospect for us all.”

Elephants’ former CEO Martin McClanan will remain president of the deli, in addition to serving as a leader of The Ground.

The transition follows the shutdown of Elephants’ flagship location on Northwest 22nd Avenue that first opened in 2004. The restaurant, located just blocks away from where the new spot will debut next year, was damaged by a fire earlier in March…
