- Natalie Wood’s Lookalike Daughter Reveals Heartbreaking Way She Learned Her Mom Had Died at Just 11 (parade.com)
Natalie Wood’s daughter, Natasha Gregson Wagner, recalls a childhood forever altered by tragedy. At just 11 years old, she learned of her mother’s death in a heartbreaking way-while staying overnight at a friend’s house, hearing the news on the radio.
Wood, a celebrated Hollywood icon, died on November 29, 1981, after disappearing from the family yacht near California’s Catalina Island at age 43. In the wake of this loss, Gregson Wagner found support from two father figures: her biological father, British producer Richard Gregson, and her stepfather, actor Robert Wagner.
“Luckily, I had these two men, Daddy Gregson and Daddy Wagner, who came together and rose to the occasion and completely put me first,” she shared. They ensured she received therapy early on, helping her navigate the difficult years ahead.
Despite growing up surrounded by Hollywood glamour, Gregson Wagner describes her childhood home as “safe and secure and warm.” Yet her mother’s passing left a profound void.
Seeking comfort, she often found solace in the familiar scents her mother left behind. “As a child, I always knew my mom, Natalie Wood, was home because her scent arrived before she did,” Gregson Wagner wrote on her fragrance brand’s website, L’Amour Mere, meaning “Mother’s Love.”
Spending time among her mother’s clothes and belongings, she hoped to keep her presence alive through fragrance.
This deep connection to scent inspired Gregson Wagner to create L’Amour Mere, capturing the essence of her mother’s favorite aromas-from Jungle Gardenia perfume to the candles and roses that filled their home. “For me, perfume is a scent trail leading back to the people I have loved most,” she explained.
The birth of her own daughter, Clover, in 2012 further motivated Gregson Wagner to honor her mother’s enduring love. She reflects on the uncanny resemblance between herself and Wood, recalling how strangers would often comment on their likeness.
Rather than confirming the connection, she would simply say, “Oh, I hear that a lot!” She mused, “We looked so much alike and had so much in common.
Where did the mother end and the child begin?”
Natalie Wood’s legacy as one of Hollywood’s brightest stars endures through films like Rebel Without a Cause, West Side Story, and Miracle on 34th Street. Her death has remained a subject of public fascination, initially ruled an accidental drowning before being re-examined years later. Although investigations included her husband Robert Wagner as a person of interest, no charges were filed, and he has denied involvement.
Gregson Wagner continues to honor her mother’s memory, focusing on Wood’s life rather than the circumstances of her death. She produced and appeared in the 2020 HBO documentary Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind, which celebrated Wood’s legacy through intimate family and friend interviews.
For Gregson Wagner, scent remains a powerful link to the past. “What I love most about scent is that it speaks directly to memory and emotion,” she reflected.
“Fragrance can transport us instantly to forgotten moments and lost versions of ourselves.” Through this personal journey, she keeps her mother’s presence alive for herself-and for others who cherish Wood’s enduring impact.
