Columbus fire officials urge caution for lithium-ion charging

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Central Ohio fire officials are asking people to think twice before plugging in their electronic devices, or it could pose a serious fire risk.

Lithium-ion batteries are in most things people use every day, like cell phones and other electronic devices. Lt. Nicholas Davis with the Columbus Division of Fire says people need to make sure the devices are being charged correctly.

While it’s tempting to save a couple bucks on an off-brand charger, Davis says the wrong one can increase the chances of a fire.

“Get the original manufacturer’s charging cords because once we get into the aftermarket world, it gets too dangerous,” Davis said. “They’re not properly tested and regulated, so they might not be compatible with your iPhone or your iPad.”…
