Dispute leaves East Lansing parking lot empty, businesses frustrated

EAST LANSING, Mich. (News 10) – A parking lot at the corner of Bailey Street and Albert Avenue is at the center of a dispute between the lot’s owners and the city of East Lansing.

The owners closed off their portion of the lot after a development proposal for the property was rejected by the city this summer. Businesses in the area say the closure is affecting their sales.

Development proposal rejected

Several years of stalled development at the site culminated this summer when the latest proposal, for a high-rise apartment complex, was rejected by city leaders in July. City leaders cited concerns about impacts to parking.

“I think that I am concerned that we have locally-owned independent businesses in our downtown that we would like to keep there,” East Lansing Mayor Erik Altmann said during the July 21 meeting…
