Elephant calf at Saint Louis Zoo gets ‘breakthrough’ vaccine for deadly virus

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – An elephant at the Saint Louis Zoo is one of the first Asian elephant calves in the world to receive a vaccine for elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus, the zoo announced Thursday.

The virus, referred to as EEHV, was discovered in 1995 and young elephant calves are especially vulnerable to it, facing a 60-80% mortality rate. The Saint Louis Zoo has lost only one elephant to EEHV in the past – a six-year-old Asian elephant named Kenzi, who died in 2018…
