A Garden District school is cutting down oak trees to build new gym. Some neighbors are upset.

Louise S. McGehee School this week has been defending a plan to cut down several large oak trees so that it can build a bigger gymnasium on its Garden District campus after some local residents and school alumni raised objections.

The four oak trees on the all-girls school’s campus are being removed to make way for a long-planned campus renovation approved by the city, school leaders said in a message to families this week.
