Progress on a new $1 billion cancer hospital on the campus of Medical University of South Carolina can be seen in what will soon disappear — old buildings now coming down.
The 14-story tower in downtown Charleston will rise from the site at Calhoun Street and Ashley Avenue as MUSC pursues an aggressive timeline to get it constructed and open by April 2030. It will be the centerpiece of the drive to create the state’s first Comprehensive Cancer Center even as MUSC Hollings Cancer Center’s services and clinical trials stretch to every county in the state, officials said. And that need will only grow in the future.
At a meeting Oct. 8 of the MUSC and MUSC Health board of trustees, cancer committee chair Don Johnson put the progress this way: “Knocked some buildings down, which always makes you feel good that you are going to do something.”…
