Western Michigan shuts out Ferris State 6-0 in series opener

BIG RAPIDS — The No. 8-ranked Western Michigan University Broncos (1-0 overall) were too much for the Ferris State University men’s ice hockey squad (0-2-1) on Thursday (Oct. 8) at Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo in a 6-0 win.

Western Michigan finished with a 38-25 edge in total shots for the game and held a 32-23 advantage in face-offs overall. FSU went 0-of-8 on the power play as WMU was called for eight penalties totaling 16 minutes to only six for the Bulldogs netting 12 minutes. The Broncos were 2-of-6 with the man-advantage.

“We need to be disciplined,” Ferris coach Brett Riley said coming into the series. “We need to play with a little more structure and mange the puck. If we can build off what we did in night two last week (at Canisius in a 5-5 tie) I think we’ll like the direction in which we are going.”…
