California bill would require 4-hour gun safety course with live-fire training by 2029

REDDING, Calif. — Californians who want to buy a gun, along with gun owners moving into the state, will soon face a new training requirement under a newly passed bill.

Assembly Bill 948 changes the process for obtaining a firearm safety certificate from a written test only to both a written test and a minimum four-hour safety course that includes live-fire training. The new requirement is set to take effect Jan. 1, 2029, and it will not apply to people who have a concealed carry weapon permit.
