Will Stein explains how Kentucky’s loss to Alabama changed his approach

A month ago, Kentucky took its first big swing of the Will Stein era — and for one half, it worked. With Kroger Field in an absolute frenzy, the Cats led No. 12 Alabama 17-13 at half, but didn’t score a single point after that. Since then, Kentucky has been on a roll, winning three straight, including upsets at Texas A&M and South Carolina. As Will Stein prepares for his next big swing, tonight vs. No. 10 LSU, he opened up about the lessons he learned from the Alabama loss and how they’ve helped him in each game since.

“I think when you just go back and think about each game and how we’ve operated offensively, each game is a life of its own,” Stein said during his radio show on Wednesday. “Each play is a life of its own, so we felt like, as a staff, that we didn’t have enough pace to us in that game to really, once we got down some, we couldn’t just hop into — not two-minute mode, because that’s almost desperate — but just playing with pace a little bit. No huddle, getting on the ball, putting pressure on the defense.

“So, we went back after that and said, ‘Hey, alright, listen, we were a little bit too much like this. Let’s change our approach in these next games.’ And went into Texas A&M with a little bit more, I don’t want to say spread, but just on-the-ball mentality. We still blend huddles and still speed break and do all that stuff.”…
