Baton Rouge church celebrates Armenian faith and culture with upcoming event

The doors of St. Garabed Armenian Apostolic Church in Baton Rouge will swing open on Sunday for more than a worship service. The church, 6208 Florida Blvd., welcomes the community from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 11 for its Feast of the Holy Translators to celebrate Armenian faith, culture, food and traditions.

“The purpose of the festival is to introduce the Armenian community to the locals and also to non-Armenians and to let them know that we are here in Baton Rouge and Louisiana,” said Vasken Kaltakdjian, chairman of the church’s governing parish council. “We’re going to have our church doors open for everyone who would like to come in, visit and look at the church.”

Considered one of the most beloved celebrations in the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Feast of the Holy Translators commemorates the special group of fifth-century scholars and church leaders who gave the Armenian people their alphabet and translated the Holy Scriptures.
