IOWA, NEBRASKA, SOUTH DAKOTA, (KCAU) — County officials across Siouxland are encouraging folks to avoid outdoor burning this weekend. Some of those counties include Yankton County in South Dakota, Wayne County in Nebraska, and Plymouth County here in Iowa.
In Plymouth County, Hinton EMS and Rescue posted a statement on their Facebook page asking farmers to avoid harvesting for the rest of the day.
Fire Chief Cameron Peirce said in the post, “Almost every department in the area are on grass fires at the moment due to multiple combines igniting fires in multiple locations…Your cooperation is greatly appreciated…”
Due to the increased fire danger, officials are saying to take precautions to keep yourself and others safe.
- Avoid brush and grass burning. The dry conditions will create situations that may not be easily contained.
- Use caution when operating heavy equipment. Sparks could fly to nearby dry areas and create fires.
- Do not carelessly discard cigarettes out of car windows or by other means as it can ignite dry materials found along roadways and in fields.
