Meet the Candidates: Nate Willems

(Anamosa) — KMA News continues its “Meet the Candidates” series, featuring candidates running in key races in the November general election. Today’s report features the Democrat incumbent in Iowa’s Attorney General’s race, Nate Willems.

A native of Anamosa, Willems holds a bachelor of science degree from Georgetown University and a juris doctor from the University of Iowa College of Law. Willems served in the Iowa House from 2009-2013. For about two decades, Willems has worked as an attorney in Cedar Rapids, dealing mainly with labor issues. Currently, Willems and his wife Maggie–a high school social studies instructor and state championship-winning volleyball coach–live in Mount Vernon. The couple have three teenage daughters. Speaking on KMA’s “Morning Line” program Monday morning, Willems says he’s running for attorney general to return the office to serving the people.

“I’ve been a labor lawyer for Cedar Rapids for almost 20 years,” said Willems, “representing workers who have been hurt on the job, workers who have had wages stolen out of their paycheck–that sort of thing. But, my clients typically are folks who sell their lives by the hour, and work with their hands. I’m happy to take on their battles, whether it be an insurance company or a big corporation–that’s the work I’ve been doing for quite a while over here.”…
