Maricopa Teen Gives Shoes to Grieving Stranger, Sparks Viral Fundraiser

Jordan Hope was just trying to get to the bank. Instead, the 18-year-old Maricopa entrepreneur ended up taking the shoes off his own feet and handing them to a struggling elderly stranger outside a Walgreens — a quiet moment that’s since turned into a viral wave of donations and goodwill.

Hope, a recent high school graduate who is building his own computer business in Pinal County, was driving to deposit money when he passed the Walgreens and spotted a man he would come to know as Mister Roy, according to FOX 10 Phoenix. The man’s shoes were barely holding together. “His shoes were like maybe a fourth on his foot,” Hope told azfamily.com, describing the moment that prompted him to stop.

Mister Roy was also dealing with leg problems, per Hope’s account, and after talking with him, Hope learned something far heavier than worn-out footwear was weighing on the man: his wife had died just two weeks earlier, the station reported. Hope didn’t just hand over his shoes and drive away. He went back into the store, bought the man food, and tried to help him into his car — but a medical condition causing severe leg swelling made that difficult, so Hope arranged a rideshare instead, per the same account.

A Friendship That Didn’t End When the Camera Stopped

What makes the story resonate beyond a single good deed is what Hope did after it ended. He’s continued checking in on Mister Roy by phone every single day since, the station reported. He’s also made plans for something more lasting than a one-time encounter…
