Baltimore Mother Still Waits 11 Years After Son Shot 19 Times on Rubin Avenue

Marcus Downer was shot and killed on the 5500 block of Rubin Avenue in Northwest Baltimore on July 26, 2015, just 12 days after his 23rd birthday. Eleven years later, no arrest has been made, and his mother, Cynthia Bruce, is still waiting for answers.

Downer, a graduate of Baltimore School for the Arts who studied acting there, was rushed to Sinai Hospital after the shooting, but doctors could not save his life, according to WMAR-2 News. Bruce has said she was at a viewing when she learned her son had been shot, and that the moment shattered her life.

Det. Jill Beauregard, who investigates cold cases for the Baltimore Police Department, says the people who were present during the homicide have not spoken to police or identified a suspect. The station’s report notes that investigators could not test the case for DNA evidence, and detectives were unable to collect surveillance footage from the scene. Police believe the incident may have had something to do with a baby stroller, though the exact connection remains unexplained in the available reporting.
