Governor Hochul Signs Legislation to Establish Little Yemen as a Cultural District

Governor Hochul signed legislation allowing Little Yemen to be designated a cultural district. The Governor made the announcement while joined by business leaders and community members from across the Bronx. By signing this bill, Governor Hochul recognizes the vibrant Yemeni culture in the Bronx. Cultural organizations within the Little Yemen cultural district may be eligible for grant assistance from New York State. The district will span from White Plains Road on the west, to Bronxdale Ave on the east and north, and Van Nest Ave on the south.

“Little Yemen has long contributed to the culture of the Bronx, and it’s about time we recognize it,” Governor Hochul said. “At a time when Islamophobia is rising, we need to make sure every one of Little Yemen’s entrepreneurs, civil servants, teachers, police officers and hard working moms and dads know: You belong here. We see you. We are proud that you are with us, and we are here to support you.”

Little Yemen has rapidly grown over the past few years. Some families have long resided in Little Yemen or have come from other boroughs; others fled civil war abroad and found safety in New York. After years of Yemeni restaurant-openings and parades, Little Yemen will now be officially recognized as a cultural district. It will join “El Barrio” in East Harlem and the Harlem Renaissance Cultural District.

State Senator Gustavo Rivera said, “I am so proud that Governor Hochul signed Senator Fernandez’s bill into law designating Little Yemen as a cultural district. This designation honors the incredible contributions of our Yemeni neighbors to our beautiful borough. What makes our State great is the vibrant diversity of New Yorkers and our rich immigrant history, so I am grateful to welcome this honor and support to our Little Yemen community.”…
