Elk Grove Nonprofit Sells Ranch for $1.85M, Goes Mobile in Hot Pink Van

Chicks in Crisis has sold the Elk Grove ranch that served as its home base for a decade, pocketing $1.85 million from a local dentist and real estate investor who is now weighing whether to build affordable senior housing on the property. The nonprofit is moving toward mobile operations, with a hot pink van carrying diapers, formula and parenting support directly to families across the Sacramento region.

A Decade-Old Ranch Changes Hands

The sale, reported on October 28, 2026, closed for $1.85 million, according to The Business Journals. For 10 years, the ranch functioned as a safe haven for teen moms and families in need, according to cbsnews.com. The buyer is now considering developing affordable senior housing on the property, though no unit count, timeline or approval has been confirmed.

The move away from a physical ranch wasn’t sudden. In October 2025, the organization had already signaled plans to sell the property and continue its mission on wheels, according to CBS Sacramento. The organization has since sold the ranch and continues mobile outreach.

Donations Plummeted Before the Sale

The shift was driven by a steep funding collapse. The nonprofit’s donations dropped more than 90%, leaving it unable to sustain the ranch, the same cbsnews.com report found. Despite that financial strain, the mobile van was able to help nearly 200 people in a single week, the station reported, a sign of how much demand remains even as the group’s physical footprint shrinks.

The van, now central to the nonprofit’s model, is parked near areas like schools to reach a lot of young people at once, according to the same account. Through this outreach, the organization continues getting diapers, wipes and household items into the hands of families who need them, cbsnews.com reported.

Nearly Three Decades of Service

Chicks in Crisis traces back to founder Inez Whitlow, who created the organization 29 years ago out of her garage to help pregnant women, per cbsnews.com’s reporting. What began as a grassroots effort has grown into a broader support network. The group’s GuideStar profile describes a mission built through parenting education, emergency assistance that includes diapers, formula and hygiene supplies, workforce development, and mental health support for young parents and families in crisis, according to GuideStar…
