Safeway’s store at 6150 Bollinger Road in San Jose is expected to close on or around November 13. The location has been part of the neighborhood since September 1969, giving the store a 57-year run.
A long-running full-service grocery store is set to leave
The Bollinger Road location is more than a basic grocery stop. Safeway’s current store page lists grocery pickup and delivery, plus a bakery, deli, fresh meat, seafood, and produce departments. The store also has an in-store Starbucks and accepts SNAP EBT for eligible purchases.
That mix of services matters because shoppers used one address for several food needs. At 6150 Bollinger Road, customers could pick up groceries, order bakery items, buy prepared foods, and grab coffee in the same trip. For nearby families, that kind of one-stop setup can be hard to replace on foot.
Safeway confirmed the planned November closure, but it has not publicly explained why the store is shutting down. No employee count, transfer plan, or confirmed layoff total has been announced. There is also no confirmed replacement grocer or redevelopment proposal for the site.
The store’s location near schools adds another layer
The store sits near Lynbrook High School, Miller Middle School, and Hyde Middle School. That has made it a regular stop for students looking for food after school and for teachers buying classroom supplies and ingredients. In this case, the grocery closure affects both shopping habits and day-to-day routines around the schools…
