Department of Sanitation warns property owners about cleaning sidewalks of snow, ice

Shortly after the snowfall let up Tuesday afternoon, the focus has shifted to cleanup efforts.

The Department of Sanitation said property owners have up to four hours after the last snowfall to clear walkways and sidewalks to make them safe and passable for people to get through.

Failure to do so can result in a $100 fine for the first offense.

“A lot of the sidewalks were still pretty covered by the afternoon, so It gets pretty dangerous,” said college student Stephen Perrillo.

The deadline for sidewalks and pathways to be cleared on Tuesday was 6 p.m.

Bronx sidewalks remain covered in slush, which will freeze and become ice patches as temperatures begin to drop this evening.

DSNY said it is hoping not to pass down any fines, but enforcement crews will be checking for troubled areas and sidewalks Wednesday morning to ensure the safety of New Yorkers.
