Private Plane Loses a Door Near Buffalo, New York Just After Takeoff

Look, I’ll just say it: so far, 2024 has been a bad year for doors staying attached to their airplane. First, the Boeing/Alaska Airlines door plug blowout happened in early January, opening up a whole can of worms on the Boeing front. Then came February 12, when- you guessed it- another plane lost a door mid-flight.

Only this incident wasn’t precipitated by Boeing’s lax quality control standards (unless Boeing has started manufacturing small planes). This mid-air blowout happened to a small private plane flying over Buffalo, New York. Similar to the Alaska Airlines incident, though, the door suddenly came off of the aircraft shortly after takeoff!

Thankfully, the plane (a single-engine Diamond DA40 , according to USA Today ) was still close to the airport, and the pilot quickly radioed air traffic control and returned to Buffalo Niagara Airport for an emergency landing. Neither of the two people aboard were hurt during their short and scary flight.
