Student caught with gun at Myrtle Beach school to be charged, others to be disciplined, superintendent says

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — A student who allegedly brought a gun to Myrtle Beach Middle School last week will face criminal charges and several other students will be disciplined because they knew about the gun but did not alert a faculty member, Horry County Schools Superintendent Rick Maxey said in a news release.

Any student who brings a firearm to school is subject to expulsion for not less than one calendar year, Maxey said.

“We are glad that no one was injured and grateful that the MBMS staff and the School Resource Officer acted in a timely manner to respond to the situation,” he said.

Maxey said the concerning part about the incident is that students knew about the gun and did not alert faculty. The student showed the gun to them, and they were also aware that their classmate planned to bring it to school.

As a result, Maxey said they are subject to disciplinary consequences per school district policies.

On the day of the incident, the school conducted a random search, the release said. All students walked through metal detectors and their bags were randomly searched, Maxey said. However, the student’s see-through bookbag, which contained the gun and ammunition, was not randomly chosen to be searched that day.
