Surfside Beach bringing back pier committee

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Surfside Beach Town Council voted 5-2 Tuesday night to bring back its pier committee, which was suspended in August amid a disagreement over its role with the new pier.

Current Mayor Rob Krouse, who was the committee chairman when it was disbanded under former Mayor Bob Hellyer, explained his vision for the pier’s future. He said the town’s Public Works department will be responsible for maintaining the pier while the committee will focus on commercial-type operations, such as games and amusement and town merchandise sold at the pier.

He said two former members of the committee have indicated that they would work on the newly reinstated committee.

“It’s pretty broad,” Krouse said. “I chaired the pier committee in the past, we had pretty free rein to bring any suggestions we wanted, and I intend to keep that for the pier committee in its reinstatement.” I believe that pretty much every committee should not be constrained. It should be allowed to bring whatever ideas that it wants.”
