The Springfield school board was given two versions of a proposed policy to permit the alcohol and drug testing of students — but it was unclear which one will come up for a vote.
The first version authorizes the district to require a student to submit to testing if an administrator has a reasonable suspicion that he or she is under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The second version also gives the district the power to require random drug testing of students in grades 9-12 as a condition of participating in extracurricular activities governed by the Missouri State High School Activities Association.
In a study session Tuesday, board member Kelly Byrne questioned why two versions were presented, noting that was not the typical process.
Superintendent Grenita Lathan said she wanted the board to review the options and provide feedback before the administration makes a recommendation at the Feb. 27 meeting.
“We were just trying to make sure everything is transparent so that you see the options in front of you,” she said.
