The Springfield Fire Department on Tuesday released the identity of a man who died in a recent house fire in north Springfield.

Stephen A. Schultz, 69, died in the early morning of Jan. 30 after his home at 2547 North East Avenue caught fire, according to SFD. The fire was determined to be accidental.

Firefighters said they found a victim inside the blazing home around 2 a.m, and life-saving measures were immediately performed. Schultz reportedly died at the scene.

Schultz moved to Springfield from Colorado in 2018 to be closer to relatives, according to his obituary.

“A skillful woodworker, known for his custom corn hole games, working as a groundskeeper, and bass fishing with neighbor Greg, (Schultz) found a good life away from his beloved Colorado,” his obituary read. “Steve will always be remembered for his quick wit, ready smile, and mischievous sparkle in his eye. Always ready to do the next fun thing.”
