‘He was dead for 8 minutes:’ Hillsborough mother thankful for those who saved son’s life with CPR, AED

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A Hillsborough County student and his mother are thankful after he was saved by CPR and deputies with an AED after he collapsed at track practice earlier this month.

It’s a day Ansel Laureano doesn’t remember, but one his mother, Bismeiry Lantigua, said she will never forget.

“You know the difference about you being born again? Right now we have to celebrate two birthdays for you,” she said. “Feb. 5 and June 27. You have any idea what that significates? You literally were born again.”

When Ansel Laureano, a healthy, sporty student, collapsed on the track, his coach, Lauren, began CPR. Shortly after, a Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputy arrived and started using a defibrillator.

Those eight minutes, which felt like a lifetime, saved his life.

“He was dead for eight minutes,” Lantigua said. “He didn’t breathe. The heart stopped completely.”

Until his heart started to pump again.
