‘An American Hero’: Cherokee County Marine Veteran Receives New Porch

A Marine veteran living in Cherokee County was in need of a new porch recently, and now thanks to a group of nonprofits it’s safer for him and his family to enter and leave their house.

Purple Heart Homes, in collaboration with Semper Fi & America’s Fund and The Home Depot Foundation hosted a “Mission Complete” ceremony for Marine veteran John Alvarez Feb. 13.

The ceremony took place at Alvarez’s residence near Canton, which sports a new wraparound porch. According to Purple Heart Homes, the renovation project took four days to complete.

Prior to the renovations, Alvarez’s porch, which was tied to the roof of the home, was rotting and pulling the roof away from the house.

Purple Heart Homes, alongside its partners, provided the necessary resources for the completion of the project.

The cost of this project exceeded $33,000.

“I can’t phrase how thankful I am for this,” Alvarez said. “I have so much appreciation for what you guys have done. It’s truly amazing. To know that there is an organization like this that will help veterans that lost something over there — it’s huge.”
