CLEVELAND, (Ohio) WJW — Highways shut down, airports, schools and businesses closed as two feet of snow fell in parts of Northeast Ohio by the end of February 14, 2007.

Heading our way: Strong wind, rain & snow

That historic Valentine’s Day snowstorm 17 years ago today raged on for two days with heavy snow, ice and gusty winds whipped up large snowdrifts stranding motorists.

The heavy snow started on the evening of Feb. 13 and continued through Wednesday afternoon of Feb. 14.

Portions of I-77 were the first long stretches of highways to be closed between Cleveland, Akron and Canton after being shut down by the Ohio State Highway Patrol due to drifting snow.

Whiteouts caused by blizzard conditions shut down Akron-Canton Airport and led to a ground stop at Hopkins International Airport.

Fox 8 Meteorologist Scott Sabol said the nearly 16 inches of snow that fell in Cleveland that day still stands as the highest two-day snow total since that storm 17 years ago.
