Republican U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama said Wednesday the U.S. needs to be more selective about who it lets in the country.

Speaking on a range of issues at a breakfast hosted by the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Wednesday morning, Tuberville said that immigrants “who want to be Americans for the right reasons” should be invited to immigrate legally.

“We get calls all the time from India, all over Europe, of people looking for a work visa or looking to come into our country that are engineers, that are doctors, that are architects, that have gone on and improved their life through education, but they want a different life, and they see the opportunities here,” Tuberville said to reporters after the breakfast.

He did not answer a question regarding how to address migrants who entered the country without authorization, estimated at 10.5 million, or about 3% of the total U.S. population, according to the Pew Research Center.
