If you feel as if everyday you are seeing more and more contaminated food articles especially around Listeria related issue you are not imagining things. It appears there are more issues being found almost daily as the investigation continues. According to the FDA the latest company to issue a recall is a big one, Dole Fresh Vegetables, Inc. They are recalling a limited number of Dole-branded and private label salad kits which were processed on the same line as a cheese that has also been recalled by the manufacturer. Rizo-Lopez Foods has been at the center of many recalls for the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.
According to the National Library of Medicine, Listeria monocytogenes is a dangerous bacteria and commonly causes meningitis in the young, elderly, and immunocompromised patient population. Any healthy individuals infected with L. monocytogenes typically have a self-limiting gastrointestinal infection with fever and diarrhea. Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
